Thomas M. Ward is descended from a race of pioneers. His grandfather was a
native of Scotland, who emigrated to the US and settled in North Carolina in
the colonial times.

His father, David Ward, was born in that state, but was among the early
settlers in Cook County, Tennesse, where the subject of this sketch was born
May 23 1815. His mother was Nancy Turk Mitchell Ward, a native of VA. Her
grandfather was an officer in the Revoluntionary War.

Shortly after he was born, his parents moved to Missouri ended up in
Lafayette County. Thomas became an expert as a carpenter and cabinet-maker.
