9-23-1864 - David enlisted as a substitute, at Corneille OH, during the Civil War. He was given a clothing account of $26.80. Serving in the 19th Regiment of the Ohio Volunteers, Co. K, commanded by Captain Roberts. In April if 1865 he was detached with Shermans Army in Nashville, Tenn. He never served with his assigned unit.

6-10-1880 - The Auglaize Co, Noble Twp OH census shows David living with his children Arabell, Mary, Henrietta, Louis & Eliza. David is 50 years old. His wife Ann has died by this time. Sons Edward & William are married and living nearby. Living nest to David is Ephram Fishpaw (Ann Fishpaw Slife's brother) and Rachel Baker & her son Oliver.
8-24-1880 - David files an application for an invalid pension with the Federal Government for his Civil War Service. On 4-15-1865, at Morehead City NC he was injured while unloading a steamboat by falling through a hatchway. He broke 3 ribs, split 1 rib and dislocated his shoulder. He application states that he is 5'11" tall, weight 168, complexion fair, age 52.
5-2-1881 - David writes to the Pension Bureau to find out the status of his claim. His letter states "that on the night of the 3rd of April my dwelling house burned down with all its contents inside except ourselves and no insurance, this fire was witnessed by Ephraim Fishpaw, Oliver Baker & H.C. Graver". The 1880 census shows Ephraim Fishpaw & Oliver Baker as David's next door neighbors.
8-18-1882 - David's invalid pension is denied. David was able to prove his military service and that he was injured, however he was unable to prove that he was 100% disabled. Pensions were only granted to 100% disabled and retirement pensions were not granted until 1909.

He fought in several major battles of the war, including the Battle of Trenton NJ on 7-5-1776, Princeton NJ on 1-2-1777, Germantown on 10-4-1774 and Monmourth. He was discharged from service in PA.
5-30-1819 - John was living in Fairfield County, OH and began receiving his Military Pension for Rev. War service at the rate of $8 per month and a back payment of $125.42.

Henry Sliffe, in 1808, made a trip afoot from Pennsylvania to Tuscarawas County, OH, and, after due inspection, entered the southwest quarter of Section 22. The nest year, he brought his wife on horseback to the farm, leaving his children with friends, built a cabin, cleared, planted and harvested several acres, and in the fall they returned to Pennsylvania, intending to emigrate the following year. Reports of Indian troubles, however, deterred them; but, in 1811, he made the final journey, bringing his family in a cart drawn by two oxen and a horse. Mr. Sliffe was a member of the German. Reformed Church.
